Sara V. Smith (Sally), 94, of Lewistown, passed away at 7:50 a.m. Friday, February 5, 2016, at Ohesson Manor Nursing Home.

Born Aug. 27, 1921, in Lewistown, she was the daughter of the late Willis and Edna (Decker) Weaver.

In 1941, Sally wed Russell M. Smith, who preceded her in death in August of 2011, after 70 years of marriage.

She also was preceded in death by her brother William Weaver and great-granddaughter, Alana Boettinger.

Sally is survived by her daughters, Carole Peiffer, of New Cumberland and Sharyn Boettinger and husband, Charles, of Harrisburg. She also leaves eight grandchildren: Karen Peiffer, of New Cumberland, Matthew Peiffer and wife, Sandii, of Enola, Kirsten Kocher and husband, Douglas, of Camp Hill, Craig Peiffer, of Harrisburg, Charles Boettinger and wife, Beth, of Duncannon, Leah Bell and husband, David, of Waynesburg, Russell Boettinger and wife, Joanna, and Sally Mills and husband, James, both of Tennessee. Also surviving are 15 great-grandchildren: Jacob, Gabriel and Kathryn Kocher, Kaeden and Tyya Peiffer, Marisa, Jordyn, Hannah, B.J., Jesi and Micah Boettinger, Chloe Mills, and Charlotte, Noah and Esther Boettinger.

Sally was a graduate of Lewistown High School, Class of 1939, and a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lewistown where she taught Sunday school and Bible school for many years. She also served as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader.

After her husband’s employer transferred them to Washington, Pa., in 1971, Sally volunteered as a teacher at the adult MH/MR training center there. Several years later they were transferred to Oil City, Pa., and she continued her teaching at the Venango County Adult Training Center.   After retiring and returning to Lewistown in 1981, Sally and Russ volunteered at Ohesson Manor for more than 20 years.

Sally was an accomplished seamstress, knitter and crocheter. She loved working in her vegetable garden, planting and caring for her flowers and baking breads, pies, cakes and cinnamon buns. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren gave her much happiness.

A memorial service will be held at 12 noon, Tuesday, Feb. 16 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 120 N. Main St., Lewistown with The Rev. Gary Roth officiating. The family invites all guests to join them for a luncheon immediately following the service at the church.

The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. until the time of the service.

Private interment will take place in Mt. Rock Cemetery, Lewistown.
