The timeframe is September 1969 through June of 1972 -- as a Penn State art student I had the pleasure of working for John Mertz. Often thinking back to that time I realize how generous John was, and how encouraging too. Leaving my classes to work in John's lab was never really a job, it was a glimpse into the world of applied photography, a counter point to my fine art fascination. John was an actual working photographer and fun to work for.

A trust and kindness came from John, he gave me my own set of keys to the building and the darkrooms, they came with after hours privileges. It was an immeasurable thing to have the freedom to work on my craft, in complete privacy, when the lab was closed. That kindness pushed me along in my work.

RIT was formative for John, the famous photography program, and soon it became my school as well, I went there for my masters degree, due in part, certainly to John.

Nearly Christmas 2022, today I found the listing of John's death, it seemed fitting to add my thoughts byway of thanks.

Robyn, I send my condolences to you and your family. John was a unique guy and what wonderful memories I have of our times together. Those times together were filled with laughter, comradery, and always looking forward to our next party. I remember John riding past my house on his bike when he was in high school. His hearty laugh and love of life will not be forgotten. Thanks for those good times, John. Rest in peace.
