W. Carolus Obituary

The daughter of the late Janet P. (Stewart) Carolus and Robert R. Carolus Sr., Jaynee was born on August 25, 1946, in Lewistown and passed away peacefully on June 25, 2020 at her home.

She was preceded in death by: her loving brother, Robert R. Carolus Jr., on January 17, 2001. She was also predeceased by: a sister, Nellie-Mae Bantz, of Mechanicsburg.

Surviving are: nieces, Angela Tennis, of Lewisberry, and Cathi Jo Mowery, of Flat Rock, N.C.; and nephews, A. Benjamin Calhoun, Alex B. Calhoun and Robert E. Carolus. Her cats, her children with fur, Putty Cat, Scaredy Cat and Odie Damnit also survive.

Jaynee received her B.S. degree in health and physical education cum laude from Lock Haven State College, in May of 1968. While at Lock Haven she participated on the field hockey, basketball and tennis teams. She was a life member of Alpha Sigma Tau social sorority and of Kappa Delta Pi, a national honor society for education majors.

She began her teaching career in Bristol Township from 1968-1970 where she coached field hockey, basketball, tennis, and softball. In 1971 she received her Master of Arts Degree in physical education from the University of Florida.

At that time, she returned to teach in the Mifflin County School District where she taught for 35 years. Jaynee coached between one and three sports in each of the years she taught school. In Mifflin County, she coached volleyball, basketball, and softball. She also officiated field hockey for 12 years. After retirement, she substituted in the county school system. Although she worked in any subject area, her favorite areas were autistic, life skills, and learning support.

She was a life member of the National Education Association and the Pennsylvania State Education Association. She was also a member of the Association of Mifflin County Educators, the Warrior Club, and a charter member of the Lady Lion Cagers Club. She had belonged to the Lewistown Women’s Bowling Association of which she served several terms as president. Jaynee also belonged to the Pennsylvania State Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance and the American Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and  Dance for 39 years.

She was an avid boater, photographer, and beach bum. For four decades plus, Jaynee was a season ticket holder for Penn State football and Lady Lion basketball. After her retirement, she also enjoyed covering sporting events for The Sentinel and âbirdingã for Bald Eagles. Her life was full of adventures: trips to four Olympics, the Philadelphia World Series, the Final Four for both men and women, sports festivals, boating down the Intra Coastal Waterway, traveling on the Erie Canal, two trips to the Alaskan Bald Eagle Festival, a cruise on the Maritime Ferry of Alaska’s Inland Passage, and filming dolphins in Cape May.

Jaynee loved children of all ages. She sponsored a Lake Raystown bald eagle cruise for Mifflin County’s life skills classes for 12 years. Her philosophy on life was âpractice random acts of kindness.ã She would like for everyone to be nice to someone each day, both the young and old alike, for the young are our future and the old our heritage. A special thanks to my Earth Angels and many helpful friends.
