Betty J. Baxter, 92, of Burnham, went to be with her Lord on Saturday, September 5, 2020, at Mount Nittany Medical Center, State College.
Born October 12, 1927, in Lewistown, she was a daughter of the late Charles H. and Mary R. (Moore) Schucht.
She was preceded in death by: her husband, Merle R. Baxter, who passed in August 2004; and sisters, Phyllis Stevenson, Donna Wagner, and Peggy Schucht.
She is survived by: children, Kenneth A. Baxter and wife, Elaine, of Lewistown, Sue E. Fluke and husband, Randy, of Burnham; four grandchildren, Dr. Edward Shifflett and wife, Gretchen, of Swathmore, Sean Fluke, of Lewistown, Corey Baxter, of Milroy, Jessica Silva and husband, John, of Texas; four great-grandchildren, Alexis and companion David, Ella, Gavin, and Seleni; and one, great-great-granddaughter, Harlee; and two brothers, Samuel Schucht and wife, Ginny, of York and Charles K. Schucht, of Lewistown; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Betty was a 1945 Lewistown High School graduate.
She was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday school, was a Youth Fellowship leader, and lead the Quilter’s group. Homespun and the Community Christmas Project, which she chaired for 29 years, were her passions.
In her earlier years, she worked as a cashier at the ACME grocery store for 25 years, then at Havice’s, and at Lind Memorial Cemetery, where she retired.
She had a love for sewing, going to her grandchildren’s numerous activities and was a Pirates, Steelers, and Penn State fan.
She relied heavily on her faith throughout her life and never gave up, no matter the obstacles. One day at a time and God’s grace, those were her pillars of recovery and strength.
She was an incredibly loving person who genuinely cared for others and touched many lives. She will be missed by all.
A viewing will be held from 6 pm – 8 pm, Thursday, September 10, 2020, at Heller-Hoenstine Funeral Homes, Woodlawn, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown.
A viewing will be held from 10 am- 11 am, Friday, September 11, 2020, at First United Methodist Church, 200 E. Third St., Lewistown, with a funeral service to follow at 11 am with Reverend Randy Hughes and Reverend Cathy Boileau officiating.
Interment will take place at Lind Memorial Cemetery.
