J. A. Maxine "Max" (Stewart) Rhodes

J. A. Maxine “Max” Rhodes, 99, formerly of Burnham, passed away at 11 a.m., Thursday, May 24, 2018, at Valley View Haven, Belleville, where she had resided for the past six years.  

Born June 12, 1918, in Altoona, she was the daughter of the late Chester L. “Babe” Stewart and Nora C. (Carper) Stewart of Spruce Creek.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Vincent I. “Bobby” Rhodes on Feb. 12, 1994.  They were married May 11, 1942, in Winchester, Va., and were blessed with 51 years together.

She is survived by: three children, Robert S. Rhodes and wife, Cheryl, of Linglestown, Sidney J. Rhodes and wife, Gail, of Burnham, and Paula J. Rhodes-Bisbey and husband, Patrick, of State College; six grandchildren, David and Austin Rhodes, Carlen Corcoran, Matti Toone, and Meghan and Ryan Bisbey; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild, all of whom she thought the world of.

Maxine was one of 36 members of her Yeagertown High School graduating Class of 1936, where she served as Class Historian.  She also attended Lewistown Business School.

She was a member of Holy Communion Lutheran Church in Yeagertown.

In her early years, she worked at the cosmetics counter at McCrory’s Store in Lewistown and as a secretary at Standard Steel Corporation.  When her children were older, she returned to work at First National Bank and lastly, at Mellon Bank, both in Lewistown, retiring after 25 years.  

Maxine had many hobbies and interests and enjoyed playing bridge, golf, and doing genealogy research for her and her husband’s families.

In later years, she had many caring neighbors in Burnham who kept a watchful eye over her so she could remain in her home.  After moving to Valley View, Maxine was lovingly cared for by many.  The family is profoundly grateful and would like to thank all who looked after her. 

A viewing will be held from 10:30-11:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 29, 2018, at Heller-Hoenstine Funeral Homes, 108 First Ave., Burnham, followed by a funeral service at 11:30 at the funeral home, with Rev. Vaughn Kanagy officiating.    

Interment will take place in Yeagertown Lutheran Cemetery.
