Evelyn L. (Smith) Charlesworth

Evelyn L. Charlesworth, 94, of Lewistown, passed away Wednesday, November 6, 2019, at Ohesson Manor.

Born June 9, 1925, in Lewistown, she was a daughter of the late Herman and Edna (Ruble) Smith.  In addition to her parents, Evelyn was preceded in death by: her husband, James R. Charlesworth, June 27, 2014; two infant daughters; and her sister, Shirley Perkins.

Evelyn is survived by: daughter, Jean Louise Brown and husband, Samuel, of North Pole, Alaska; son, Robert L. Charlesworth and wife, Darla, of Lewistown; brother, Lewis H. Smith, of Lewistown; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.

Evelyn graduated from Lewistown High School and attended nursing school at Lewistown Hospital.

She was a member of Granville United Methodist Church.

Evelyn was employed at Headings Drug Store, as a secretary at Danks Department Store, and by Fisher/Sanyo Corporation, where she also served as secretary, treasurer and then president of Local Union 2115, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.  She later was Bratton Township's secretary and treasurer for 23 years before retiring.

Evelyn was a wonderful mother and grandmother, who was active in community service throughout her life.  She was a member and past Worthy Matron of the Lewistown Order of The Eastern Star; member and past secretary of the White Shrine of Jerusalem; president of the Mifflin County Labor Council; past member and president of Lewistown Business and Professional Women; 1960 national census crew leader; a 4-H leader for Bratton Township for 15 years; and Bratton Township's Republican Committee representative.  For many years, Evelyn enjoyed knitting for the Seaman's Church Institute of New York Christmas at Sea Program, by knitting over 800 caps for mariners who were often far from home during the holidays.

A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, Nov. 11, 2019, at Heller-Hoenstine Funeral Homes, Woodlawn, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown.  Special services by Lewistown Order of The Eastern Star will be held at the end of the viewing.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2019, at the funeral home, with Rev. C. Edward "Ted" Corcelius officiating.

Interment will take place at Juniata Memorial Park.
