Charles E. “Yogi” Laub, 75, of Lewistown, passed away at 7:45 p.m., Thursday, July 12, 2018, at William Penn Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.
Born Nov. 28, 1942, in Lewistown, he was the son of the late Russell W. and Edna K. (Dietz) Laub.
He was preceded in death by: his wife, RuthAnne (Sadler) Laub; and his brothers, Jay R. and Joseph H. Laub.
Yogi is survived by: his companion of 23 years, Jane Zook, of Lewistown, and her daughter, Lora Zook, of York; sister, Dorothy Conti, of Reedsville; step-children, Lewis R. “Rob” Johnson, of York, and Rex A. Johnson, of Wellsboro; and eight step-grandchildren, Samantha and Maxwell Johnson, of Wellsboro, Derek and Elizabeth Johnson, of York, and Trevor, Ethan, Caitlyn and Gele Shawver, of Lewistown.
He graduated from Lewistown High School, Class of 1961.
In his early years, Yogi worked at Glick’s Shoe Store and Penshire Clothing. He entered the political arena after being elected as Mifflin County’s Register of Wills and Recorder of Deeds where he served for 20 years, and later served two terms as a Mifflin County Commissioner. He was also an attendant for Hoenstine Funeral Home for 17 years.
Yogi was past president and board member of the Lewistown Borough Water Authority; past exalted ruler of the Elks Lodge; past president of the Lewistown Lions Club; captain and life member of City Hook & Ladder Co. 14; life member of Henderson, Fame and Brooklyn Fire Companies; and a fire policeman. In younger days, he officiated baseball, softball and basketball games, and enjoyed bowling. He did volunteer work for many community organizations, including the Salvation Army, homeless shelter and cancer society.
Yogi was well known for frequenting local restaurants with family and friends, especially The Parkway Store, and for his friendly wave.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m., Saturday, July 21, 2018, at Hoenstine Funeral Home, 75 Logan St., Lewistown. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m., at the funeral home, with Pastor Randy Traxler and Pastor Michael Bailey officiating.
Interment will take place at Church Hill Cemetery, Reedsville.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Yogi’s name may be made to City Hook and Ladder Co. 14, 317 Valley St., Lewistown, PA 17044, or to a charity of one’s choice.
