Marian Ann (Miller) Shade, 89, formerly of Lewistown, passed away at 9:31 p.m., Sat., Nov. 26, 2016, at Valley View.

Born August 23, 1927, in Burnham, she was the daughter of the late Esther Mae (Jacobs) and Jay G. Miller.  She was also preceded in death by her husband, Joseph D. Shade, on July 14, 2002.

She is survived by: her sons, Jay R. Fulmer and wife, Nancy, of Buckeystown, Md., and Robert G. Fulmer and wife, Lynn, of Mt. Laurel, NJ and grandsons, Jason, Andy, and Brett Fulmer.

Marian graduated from Lewistown High School, Class of 1945 and then went on to earn an Associate’s degree in 1948 from Endicott College in Beverly, Mass.

She was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church.

At the age of five, she moved with her parents to their new home in Lewistown and spent much time on her father’s farm in Vira.  A great animal lover, she particularly enjoyed riding her horses.

In 1951, Marian Ann married Robert L. Fulmer, a local radio announcer.  Subsequently, they lived in Princeton, NJ; Washington D.C.; and Philadelphia, Pa., relocating as Robert’s career in broadcasting advanced.  While living in Washington, Marian Ann worked as an executive secretary for an advertising firm, and while in Philadelphia, she gave birth to her two sons. Marian Ann and Robert divorced in 1963, and in 1965, she returned to her father’s farm to raise her sons.

In 1969, she married Joseph D. Shade, a dairy farmer, and they lived and worked together on the farm.  In addition to being a homemaker, Marian Ann did much canning and freezing of the foods they raised on the farm.  She also enjoyed raising sheep, being a 4-H leader, and occasional shopping trips to Philadelphia.  They sold the farm in 1999 and moved to a new home in Rolling Hills.  During this time, Marian Ann developed an interest in researching the Miller family genealogy.  She and Joseph looked forward to her grandsons’ summer visits and showing them local attractions, which included a coal mine tour and visits to Raystown Lake.  Following Joseph’s passing in 2002, Marian Ann continued to live in their home until 2013, when she moved to the Valley View Retirement Community.

A graveside service will be held at Noon on Thurs., Dec. 1 at Juniata Memorial Park, Lewistown, with the Rev. Gerald Peachey officiating.
