John A. Monsell

John A. Monsell, 71, of Lewistown died at 3:19 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5, 2015 at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.

Born Feb. 1, 1944 in Lewistown he was a son of the late John H. and K. Maxine (Allen) Monsell.

John is survived by: his wife, Jayne (Boop) Monsell, whom he married Aug. 12, 1967; his sons, Bret D. Monsell and wife, Arica, of Lewistown and Michael J. Monsell and wife, Kelley, of Conshohocken; his sister, Annette Varner and husband, Marlin, of Mifflintown; his brother, Jeffery Monsell and wife, Beth, of Bear, Delaware; and his grandchildren, David, Katie, Gage and Bryce Monsell and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was a 1962 graduate of Chief Logan High School and a 1968 graduate of Shippensburg University.

John retired from the Mifflin County School District where he mainly taught English and some Driver’s Ed.  John was a great educator.

He was a member of Holy Communion Lutheran Church, Yeagertown.

John was the athletic director at Indian Valley High School. He coached the last undefeated Chief Logan football team in 1982.  He also coached baseball and Junior High basketball.  He was an avid fan of all sports.  He loved the outdoors, his family and especially his grandchildren.  During his senior year at Shippensburg he was the MPV of the university’s football team. He also belonged to the Sigma Phi Fraternity.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 9 at Holy Communion Church with Rev. Philip Tundell officiating.

A viewing will be held from 6 – 8:00 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8 at Heller-Hoenstine Funeral Home, Woodlawn, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown.
